Distracted Walkers are Becoming A New Hazard

YieldCell phones have long been accused of distracting drivers and causing accidents.  Well now they are doing the same for people walking in the street.  How many of us have seen someone walking down the street cell phone glued to their hand oblivious to anything going on around them.  They bump into people, walk into the street without looking, etc.

This can also become a hazard to people on the job.  If a pedestrian walks in front of a delivery truck and that driver gets in an accident because the walker was not paying attention and gets injured that is now a workers comp claim.  The same can be applied to workers in construction zones and other places.

A study found that more than 1,500 pedestrians were treated at emergency rooms in 2012 for injuries related to using a cell phone and walking.

I guess the phase used to be can you walk and chew gum at the same time, I think that will have to change to can you walk and use a cell phone at the same time.  My guess is most of us can’t and it is becoming a problem, it takes a few seconds to stop and send that text or email.  Let’s all try to be a little more attentive while we are out and about.
