Amazon Workers Sickened by Bear Spray
March 15, 2026

Two dozen Amazon warehouse workers went to the hospital after a can of bear spray was punctured by a machine and released fumes into the warehouse.

“The safety of our employees is always our top priority and a full investigation is already underway,” said communications representative Rachel Lightly.

An automated machine punctured the 9-oz. can of repellent containing concentrated capsaicin, an active component of chili peppers, at a New Jersey warehouse. The fumes were contained to one section of the building’s third floor and that area was cleared for several hours. Two dozen workers were sent to five area hospitals, one of whom was reportedly in critical condition, but all were expected to be released. Thirty other workers were treated at the warehouse, most reported difficulty breathing or a burning in their throats and eyes. There are hundreds of employees working in the warehouse, which was not entirely evacuated, and no packages were impacted because of this incident.
