In the spirit of the upcoming night of frights in Halloween I thought we would find a story that involved some Halloween tricks and pranks.
This particular case can be found in Minnesota, the Kaplan v. Alpha Epsilon Sorority dating back to 1947. Back in 1947 sororities had “house mothers”. Dora Kaplan was one such house mother at the University of Minnesota.
On Halloween evening Kaplan left the sorority house intending to attend religious services but first stopping by the local drug store to purchase first aid products for the kit inside the sorority.
As she was walking to her destinations she stepped up on a curb where some Halloween trick-or-treaters more concerned with the tricking than the treats decided it would be funny to grease the curb with a substance to make it slippery. Kaplan fell and broke her hip. Workers compensation was awarded even though the religious services were for personal reasons, her trip to the drug store was in her scope of work for needs for the sorority house.
