Liberty Mutual has released their latest Workplace Safety Index by industry. The index notes the top ten causes of workplace injuries which cause an employee to miss five or more days of work, the most serious kind. It then ranks those causes by their cost to employers (medical and lost-wage payments).

The secondmost cause was falls on the same level, accounting for 18.72 percent of injuries and costing $10.38 billion. The rest of the top ten causes (in order) were struck by object or equipment, falls to lower level, other exertions or reactions, roadway incidents, slip or trip without fall, caught in accidents, repetitive motions and struck against object injuries. In all, the top ten causes of serious workplace injuries cost $46.93 billion out of the total cost of serious workplace injuries, $55.43 billion.

The top ten causes were the same between the 2018 and 2019 report.

The index pointed to eight specific industries which account for a large portion of national workplace injuries: manufacturing, healthcare, construction, professional services, retail, wholesale, transportation and warehousing, and leisure and hospitality.

The top five causes of serious workplace injuries accounted for 67 percent or more of the serious injuries documented in those industries. Injuries to those industries also represented a total cost of $47.78 billion and 85.7 percent of all serious workplace injuries.

The index uses data from Liberty Mutual, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the National Academy of Social Insurance.
