Michigan’s Occupational Safety & Health Administration (MIOSHA) announced that employers with up to 250 employees can apply for a grant to be used in improving the safety and health of their workplace. The MIOSHA Workplace Improvement to Safety and Health (MIWISH) grant program aims to create safer work environments and reduce risks. Employers can apply for a matching grant of up to $5,000 and MIOSHA has $250,000 available to fund the program.
MIWISH will give preference to employers in high risk industries identified in MIOSHA’s 2019-2013 Strategic Plan and is recommending that employers use the funds to purchase safety and health equipment or make workplace modifications to reduce hazards. The grant period will begin October 1, 2018 and continue until the grant funding is expended.
Employers must have 250 employees or less and be able to match the grant money awarded to cover all estimated project costs. A qualified safety professional must have conducted a site-specific evaluation to justify the equipment purchase. Some examples of safety equipment recommended to be purchase are residential fall protection systems, lifting equipment for in-home or nursing care facilities, monitoring equipment for confined space entry, lock out/tag out systems, eyewash stations and more.
