OSHA Cites Buffalo U-Haul Facility For Asbestos Hazards
February 21, 2025

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited a Buffalo, NY U-Haul facility after a renovation exposed their workers to asbestos and silica hazards.

The U-Haul Company was renovating their 665 Perry St. storage facility. Inspectors at the site determined that it was not being monitored for asbestos and crystalline silica. The company failed to provide employees with the proper respiratory protection, protective clothing, or training on asbestos and silica hazards. They also did not provide a competent person oversee the work, failed to properly dispose of asbestos-containing materials and failed to provide a decontamination room.

They are facing $108,095 in proposed fines and have 15 days to comply, request an informal conference with the OSHA area director or contest the findings.

“Employers must monitor the work area for the presence of these highly hazardous substances, and put in place effective controls to protect employees from exposure,” said Michael Scime, OSHA Buffalo Area Office Director.
