Protecting Workers Fighting CA Wildfires from Smoke Hazards
September 8, 2024

We’ve all been watching the fires in California and hoping that they get under control soon. The firefighters and other workers in the thick of it are facing serious hazards on the job and should be aware of the precautions to take while fighting the fires.

The smoke is one of the most dangerous parts of the fire, as it contains harmful chemicals and other particulates. Breathing in that smoke can be harmful to the lungs and cause coughing, wheezing and difficulty breathing as well as exacerbate existing breathing problems. The California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) provides resources for employers and workers on smoke protection. Those working on containing the fires should be cognizant of how long they are outside as well as their level of physical exertion and consider pre-existing conditions and any symptoms they may experience that are related to smoke exposure.

The outdoor air quality level is posted at the United States EPA website and when it’s listed as unhealthy, very unhealthy or hazardous workers and employers should be especially watchful. Disposable respirators are just one way that workers can protect themselves, but they should be approved by the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and labeled N-95, N-99, N-100, R-95, P-95, or P-100 to filter out fine particles.

If possible, allow workers to work in an enclosed structure or vehicle with air filtration, or adjust work schedules to reduce the amount of time employees are outside.
