A worker in Sacramento alleged that their employer wrongfully terminated them after they filed a workers’ compensation claim. They won their suit against the city of Sacramento, which settled 24 various lawsuits last year.
Maryann Canelli worked as a program analyst in the city’s human resources department for four years. She suffered a workplace injury in 2015 and she filed for workers’ comp benefits. The city put her on a mandatory leave of absence and then fired her for alleged misconduct. She filed a lawsuit with the Sacramento County Superior Court in 2017, and the case was settled for $860,000.
Last year Sacramento paid $2.8 million total to settle 24 different lawsuits.
