The Texas Department of Insurance Division of Workers’ Compensation has announced that Commissioner Ryan Brannan will resign effective May 1st.

He was appointed by Governor Rick Perry in August of 2014, and was then reappointed by Governor Greg Abbot twice. His term was set to expire in February of 2019, so Governor Abbott may appoint someone to fulfill his existing term.

“I’m so proud of what we have been able to achieve during my time here, and I am grateful to both Gov. Abbott and former Gov. Perry for this opportunity,” Brannan said. “It’s time for me to take on new challenges. While I am excited about what lies ahead, I will never forget all the great people I’ve worked with in this division.”

During his time at DWC Brannan led the development of its fraud and prosecution unit. He also created a paperless initiative that digitized millions of claims, revised letters to injured workers to make them easier to read and developed rules that set the stage for telemedicine. He also worked to reduce the prevalence of compound medications and opioids in the workers’ compensation system.
