The United States Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued citations to Tower King II Inc. after three of their employees were killed while installing an antenna on a Miami communications tower.
The company is based in Texas but workers were in Miami replacing an antenna for a television station. They were on top of a tower that was over 1,000 feet tall and all three men fell to their deaths. OSHA investigators determined that a gin pole, a piece of equipment that is used to hoist loads, failed and separated from the tower. The employer failed to ensure that the capacity of the rigging attachments were adequate to support the forces imposed from hoisting loads. They were issued one serious citation for exposing employees to fall and struck-by hazards and face the maximum penalty allowed under the law, $12,934.
“This tragedy underscores the importance of having a qualified individual conduct an analysis before performing construction work on communication towers,” said Condell Eastmond, Fort Lauderdale OSHA Office Director Condell.
