U.S. Justice Department Charges 601 in Healthcare Fraud Crackdown
March 16, 2026

The United States Justice Department announced they are charging 601 individuals for healthcare fraud, saying the sweep was part of their efforts to curb the opioid crisis.

There were 162 doctors included in the arrests, as well as others who were charged for their roles in prescribing and distributing opioid painkillers illegally. They were part of the Justice Department’s annual fraud takedown and the collective cases of fraud are estimated to have cost government healthcare programs and insurers over $2 billion.

Some of the cases involved fraudulent billing of government healthcare programs, but other arrests were part of the latest efforts to combat the opioid epidemic. The Justice Department said the cases involved were not related to major corporations, although they have investigated opioid manufacturers.

Some of the cases include a Florida anesthesiologist accused of running a pill mill and a Pennsylvania doctor who allegedly billed an insurer for opioids they prescribed illegally.
