Walgreens Settles with MA After Overcharging for WC Prescriptions
April 4, 2025

Walgreens Co. will pay Massachusetts in a settlement after allegations that the company overcharged the state’s Workers’ Compensation system between 2008 and 2017. Walgreens will also implement procedures to prevent overcharging in the future, particularly on opioids.

The company is expected to pay $5.5 million back. According to the suit, Walgreens pharmacies in Springfield, New Bedford, Boston and Worcester overcharged the Massachusetts workers’ compensation system when filling prescriptions to injured workers on the program. Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey has also collected $8 million in payments from Walmart, Target, CVS and Rite-Aid pharmacies which also overcharged for prescription drugs.

A majority, 89 percent, of prescriptions paid for were for pain medications, and 73 percent of those were filled for opioids.

$4.7 million of the money from the Walgreens settlement will go to the AG’s office to support programs relating to workplace injury and prescription choice and management. $850,000 will go to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

“Our office found that over many years, Walgreens overcharged workers for various legitimate prescriptions,” said AG Healey. “This settlement ensures that Walgreens does not profit from those transactions and will help our state’s ongoing efforts to combat the opioid epidemic.”
