A bridge at the Florida International University collapsed last week and unfortunately a construction worker was among those killed in the accident. Another worker at the scene credits a safety harness with saving his life.

Navaro Brown was working on the bridge and died in the collapse. He worked for Structural Technologies VSL, a concrete support supplier and installer who supplied products for the bridge’s construction. Two other employees of the company suffered injuries.

Carlos Chapman was injured in the bridge collapse but said he thinks his harness saved his life. He heard a cracking noise and locked in his harness, the collapse occurred just seconds later. He suffered a shoulder fracture and had surgery on his nose, mouth and eye but thinks he could have been far worse off had he not been wearing his safety equipment.

This was an awful tragedy and the investigation is still ongoing, but we will keep an eye on reports as they come out to see whether this may have been a preventable tragedy. It is encouraging to hear that safety equipment helped save one worker in time of need.
