The Lake Compounce Family Theme Park in Bristol, CT has been fined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for exposing workers to complications from dangerous chemicals at the park, among other safety violations.
The park was cited for 18 different violations after an investigation from the administration. They were cited for exposing their employees to caustic and dangerous chemicals when they were spraying chemical and paint coating on equipment. In the park’s paint room they were exposed to dangerous respiratory and burn hazards in addition to chemical hazards from hexavalent chromium and methylene chloride.
Employees were not trained in how to properly handle these chemicals, and were not provided with properly fitted respiratory equipment, eye washes or hand washing stations. The park did not dispose of flammable waste materials properly and did not ensure that tools that could create sparks were removed from areas where there was flammable spraying going on. They failed to prevent flammable spraying while a vent system was not turned on.
The company is facing $70,200 in fines related to these citations. The company has said they are working with the administration to reach an “amicable resolution” to the problems.
OSHA’s Hartford, CT area director, Warren Simpson said the conditions at the park exposed workers to serious hazards and they needed to be eliminated before workers were injured.
