Hearthside Food Solutions LLC is the country’s largest manufacturer of baked goods, producing cookies and crackers for brand names like Kellogg and General Mills. After a worker at the McComb, OH facility lost part of a finger, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigated and cited them for a repeat and two serious safety violations.
The worker, who had been there for several years, was trying to clear a dough-cutting machine that did not have the proper safeguards to stop the machine parts from moving around. The company had been previously cited for this in 2010, and unfortunately this time a worker lost part of a finger on his right hand due to a lack of protections. They received two other serious violations for not turning off the machine during maintenance and not training workers on how to prevent hazards from moving parts.
The proposed fines total $52,500. Hearthside’s McComb facility employs 1,800 of the company’s 6,000 total workers.
The Toledo OSHA director, Kim Nelson, said that it was “disheartening” that this company had been cited years before for the same thing that ended up seriously injuring one of their workers.
