OSHA Cites Contractors Involved in Deadly FIU Bridge Collapse
May 17, 2024

The United States Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited five separate contractors in connection with the fatal bridge collapse that occurred on the Florida International University campus in Miami this past March. Six people died in the collapse, one worker and five people in vehicles under the bridge. Five other workers sustained serious injuries.

The five companies cited were Figg Bridge Engineers, Inc., Network Engineering Services Inc. (doing business as Bolton Perez & Assoc.), Structural Technologies LLC (doing business as Structural Technologies/VSL), Munilla Construction Management LLC and The Structural Group of South Florida Inc.

The companies collectively received seven violations and $86,658 in proposed penalties. OSHA inspectors determined the companies did not furnish a place of employment free from hazards likely to cause harm or death, as the bridge had developed several cracks of significant size in several load bearing parts of the bridge and workers were still working on it and indications of a collapse were evident. Other violations included exposing employees to crushing and fall hazards and allowing multiple employees to connect to an improperly installed lifeline.

“Collectively, these employers failed to take appropriate action and provide the necessary protections to their employees while they were working on the bridge on the day it collapsed,” said OSHA Regional Administrator Kurt A. Petermeyer.
