OSHA Cites Wegmans Grocery Chain
May 8, 2026

wegmansMaybe you live or work near a Wegmans grocery store and have the same experience many people in the office do when we go to lunch expecting to pay for a cheap salad and instead walk out with a $20 creation from the salad bar. Yet we continue to go back, the allure of the country’s #1 grocery store never fails to keep us away. Their pricey, yet irresistible, self-serve options aside; they’ve gotten in trouble recently for failing to keep their workers safe.

A Wegmans bakery facility has been cited by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for violating worker safety rules. A sanitation worker was cleaning a conveyer belt and lost his fingertip when it got caught in the belt. Wegmans denied that he lost part of his finger. We see failure to lock-out machinery all the time and it can result in nasty injuries to workers who are cleaning or repairing them. Another worker burned his wrist while repairing a steam valve and the store received a serious violation for failing to make sure that employee had the right eye, hand or face protection.

While both employees are now back at work, OSHA says that they would never have been injured had the store been using the right safeguards, and similar hazards were found in 2011 so the store was cited for repeat violations. They proposed $188,200 in fines. OSHA said that the chain prides itself as a leader in the industry, but the administration suggests that they use their industry leader status to model better workplace safety.
